Two goshawk chicks hatch after lynx scare at nest
A live camera monitoring a goshawk nest in Southwest Finland has captured the hatching of two chicks, following a tense visit by a lynx last weekend.
The Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus camera recorded the lynx climbing to the nest, raising concerns it may have damaged the two eggs. However, the first chick hatched on Wednesday and the second early Friday morning.
The mother has been diligently feeding her offspring, which are now demanding more food, according to the museum.
Luomus intendant Jari Valkama said the lynx’s motives remain unclear, though it sniffed the eggs for a long time without eating them. “It’s interesting why it went up there. Maybe it was curiosity. Eggs aren’t typically part of a cat’s diet,” he said.
Observers are now watching to see if the lynx returns now that the chicks have hatched. The nest can be viewed via live cameras.
