A new tsasouna, or small Orthodox chapel, has been completed in Saarijärvi and will be consecrated today, Yle reports. The Jyväskylä Orthodox parish built the replacement after its previous chapel was destroyed in a suspected arson fire last August.
The construction is rare, as Finnish Orthodox parishes have not built new tsasounas in decades. Parish rector Kaarlo Saarento said the chapel was finished just in time for the consecration, though final interior touches were still being made the night before.
While some work remains—including the installation of a dome on the bell tower and roof tar treatment—the chapel is now usable. The consecration ceremony will take place outdoors due to limited indoor space, as the chapel holds only a few dozen people.
Organizers have ordered cake for 150 guests, with visitors expected from Jyväskylä and other areas. A bus has been arranged for attendees from Jyväskylä. A divine liturgy will be held inside the chapel tomorrow, with fewer participants expected.
Saarento emphasized the symbolic importance of rebuilding, calling it a statement of continuity for the community.
