A fire in Savonlinna that killed four family members spread from ignition to a full blaze in about ten minutes, according to police investigative material cited by Yle.
Prosecutors charge a man with arson and four counts of murder in connection with the Independence Day fire in 2025. The victims were the suspect’s family members.
Police state the house was likely ignited with flammable liquid. The suspect escaped unharmed.
The suspect denies guilt, claiming he woke to a smoke-filled house. His account contains contradictions.
Investigators determined the fire likely started after flammable liquid was spread across multiple rooms and ignited. No electrical fault or sauna heating was found as a cause.
Minutes after ignition, the fire intensified, blocking normal exits. The suspect, naked, went to a neighbor’s door for help. Neighbors called emergency services at 8:04, by which time flames were visible from the windows.
Police arrived at 8:19 to find the house fully engulfed. Firefighters began extinguishing the blaze shortly after.
The suspect was arrested later that day. He insists an outsider set the fire and has demanded police find the “real perpetrator.” No outsiders were observed near the house.
During interrogations, the suspect struggled to explain how he escaped unharmed. In a December hearing, he denied setting the fire, stating, “Not in the name of the Heavenly Father, I could never do this to my family.”
Later, when confronted with evidence of flammable liquids, he maintained his denial, saying, “I did not do this, I did not kill my family.”
