The Tornio bridge connecting Finland and Sweden is closed for repairs until Friday morning, forcing heavy vehicles on a 150 km detour via Ylitornio, adding roughly two hours to their journey.
Normally, around 400 heavy vehicles cross the border near the bridge daily, with over 150,000 trucks recorded last year. The closure, in place since Tuesday morning, disrupts logistics for transport companies like Herajärven Kuljetus, which expects thousands of euros in extra fuel costs and potential delays for drivers trying to return home for the weekend.
“It’s a small spike in costs—fuel expenses alone will run into several thousand euros,” said Marko Herajärvi, the company’s CEO, who also handles route planning. Some 15–20 of the firm’s trucks are using the detour.
Driver Seppo Tapio, with over 30 years on the road, takes the long route in stride. “These things happen. Complaining won’t help,” he said. The detour may force drivers to park mid-route if their allowed driving time expires, and some may miss weekend breaks.
The bridge, built in 1979, is undergoing a full deck replacement to improve load capacity for growing border traffic. The €7 million renovation includes new railings, expansion joints, bearings, lighting, and structural repairs. The work extends the bridge’s lifespan by at least 50 years.
Smaller vehicles under 12 tonnes, public transport, and emergency vehicles are being diverted to the nearby Hannula bridge. A similar three-day closure is planned for July to complete the final deck pour. Officials cite safety, workspace needs, and proper concrete curing as reasons for the shutdown.
