Espoo has postponed the construction of its new theatre building by a year due to budget cuts, according to a report by Yle. The city prioritises daycare and school projects amid a tight financial situation requiring €70 million in annual savings.
The decision has disappointed Espoon teatteri managing director Matilda von Weissenberg, who called it a setback. She noted that uncertainty over the project’s timeline complicates programming and undermines credibility with audiences and partners.
The theatre, founded in 1988, currently operates from a former printing house not visibly identifiable as a theatre, with performances also held at the Espoo Cultural Centre. Von Weissenberg said lost patrons are a nightly occurrence in Tapiola due to the unclear locations.
City environment director Olli Isotalo confirmed the project remains funded and planning will continue, with contractor selection possible this year. The €64 million investment is now set to open in 2030 instead of 2029.
The current facility lacks a permanent ensemble, relying on co-productions and international collaborations. The new 455-seat venue would replace the existing 300-seat space.
