A long-planned 70 million krona upgrade to the Haraldssund tunnel in the Faroe Islands has been completed in design but lacks approved funding, according to a government minister.
Transport minister Jacob Vestergaard confirmed the delay in response to a parliamentary question from MP Eirik í Jákupsstovu, stating that while the national road authority has finalised the project plans, no budget has been allocated.
The 350-metre tunnel, which carries a two-lane road and a combined pedestrian and cycle path, requires maintenance to ensure its long-term stability. The proposed work includes raising the northern entrance by one metre, installing road lighting, and integrating the route with connecting roads on either side. Engineers have recommended age simulation studies before proceeding to guarantee the structure’s future height clearance.
