The Faroese health authority and cancer society have released a new app designed to help residents stop smoking, as the islands report higher smoking rates than neighbouring countries, Faroese broadcaster KVF reported Tuesday.

The app, named Legg av (Quit), was announced on World No Tobacco Day and follows a Danish model that has proven effective. Noomi O. Gregersen, director of the Faroese health authority, said interest in the local version has been strong.

Durita Tausen, chair of the Faroese Cancer Society, noted that smoking remains the leading cause of cancer in the islands, making cessation efforts critical. The app is intended as a practical tool to support those trying to quit.
