The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off under a cloud of political tensions and economic strain, according to football journalist Erik Niva, who warned the tournament risks becoming a “toxic cocktail” of unresolved conflicts and exorbitant costs.
Speaking to Swedish public broadcaster SVT, Niva—who contributes to Aftonbladet and Viaplay—highlighted the war in the Middle East as a key complicating factor, given the United States’ role as host. He also criticized sky-high ticket prices, arguing they undermine the event’s accessibility and tarnish the matchday experience.
“Football itself is being priced out of reach, and the spectacle is being ruined,” Niva said.
His remarks come ahead of SVT’s Utrikesbyrån program, which will examine the tournament’s challenges in an episode titled “Trump’s football World Cup.”
