Finland’s new emergency alert system, FI-Alert, will be operational by the end of October, the Ministry of the Interior announced Monday. The system will deliver near real-time warnings directly to mobile phones without requiring a separate app.

The government has accelerated the rollout, with Interior Minister Mari Rantanen previously stating the system was needed “yesterday rather than tomorrow.” On May 28, the ministry and state-owned network operator Erillisverkot signed an agreement to implement the system, which complements—rather than replaces—existing warning channels.

FI-Alert uses Cell Broadcast technology and follows the EU-Alert framework, enabling targeted regional alerts that do not congest networks like mass text messaging. The system will also reach foreign visitors’ phones, increasing coverage and reliability during crises.

Similar systems are already in use or under development across Europe, with Cell Broadcast becoming the dominant mobile-based public warning method, according to the ministry.
