Finland secured its fifth men’s ice hockey world championship early Monday after Konsta Helenius scored the winning goal in overtime, defeating Canada 1–0 in the final, Yle reports.
Celebrations erupted across the country, with fans gathering at Helsinki’s Havis Amanda statue shortly after the victory. The national team, known as Leijonat (The Lions), was invited to meet President Alexander Stubb at the Mäntyniemi residence later in the day.
The tournament win marks Finland’s first world title since 2022. Team captain Aleksander Barkov was credited with leading the squad through the competition, while head coach Jussi Ahokas became the first European to win both the world championship and the Memorial Cup in the same year.
