VAR controversy arises after Tromsø and Kristiansund match ends in draw at Romssa Arena

VAR was a hot topic following yesterday’s Eliteserien match between Tromsø and Kristiansund at Romssa Arena.

VAR, or Video Assistant Referee, is a support system designed to avoid incorrect officiating decisions in football matches. Typically, video referees operate from a remote area in the stadium, analyzing critical incidents via television feeds and multiple angle replays. They assess situations and communicate their findings to the on-field referee through a headset.

On Sunday evening, two goals by Tromsø were disallowed using VAR, resulting in a 0–0 draw.

The Norwegian Football Federation is now considering how to provide referees with additional support on the field for challenging VAR decisions. Svein Oddvar Moen, who oversees VAR in Norway, acknowledged that while they have a solid system, some margin for error exists. He emphasized that improvements are needed, stating, “It isn’t optimal as it stands now, but we are on the right track.”

Tromsø’s coach, Jørgen Vik, sympathized with the supporters’ frustration regarding VAR’s impact on the spontaneity of the game. He noted that fans often have to hold their cheers until VAR delivers a verdict. Vik stressed that the grievances brought forth by fans must be taken seriously and called for more documentation to ensure the accuracy of decisions, particularly concerning offsides. He concurred with Moen about the need to investigate the margins of error and find ways to optimize the system.
