Residents alarmed after reports of poisoned dog treats in Mikkeli, Finland
Residents of Mikkeli, Finland, are alarmed after reports of poisoned dog treats being found along popular walking paths. Local resident Ilkka Nurmi discovered pieces of sausage containing white pills last spring, prompting concerns among other dog owners in the area, particularly in Siekkilä and Lehmuskylä neighborhoods. This unsettling situation has recently intensified with the discovery of wire hooks concealed in the bait.
“This is shocking. I have two dogs who are part of the family. These traps undermine our sense of safety,” Nurmi expressed. Harri Pohjolainen, a senior officer with the Eastern Finland police, noted that cases of dog poisoning occur annually across the country. In Kuopio, for instance, meatballs laced with needles have been spread throughout the Puijonlaakso residential area for over a year.
The police take these incidents seriously, with penalties for animal cruelty potentially resulting in two years of imprisonment. Pohjolainen warned that while the likelihood of apprehending offenders in poisoning cases is generally low, the risk increases if the same individual continues these actions.
A police report has been filed regarding the incidents in Mikkeli, and local dog owners suspect the presence of a potential poisoner. “We don’t have evidence; the perpetrator needs to be caught in the act because you can’t simply confront them and demand a confession. That’s the police’s job,” Nurmi remarked.
Human medications pose significant threats to dogs, while wire hooks can cause severe intestinal harm. One acquaintance of Nurmi had to take their dog to the vet due to such a hook, though fortunately, the incident ended without serious injury. Amidst growing fear, many dog owners are now opting for muzzles during walks. “No matter how much someone may dislike dogs, this is not behavior of a healthy person,” Nurmi concluded. Pohjolainen urges all victims of poisoning incidents to report them to the authorities.
