A 34-year-old entrepreneur in western Finland is staking her financial future on a two-day music festival in Parkano, a town of 6,000, after her previous event left her with court-ordered debts and a failed business.

Mira Päljänoja’s Mirable Fest, scheduled for late June, will feature high-profile Finnish acts including Kaija Koo, Mirella, and the band Kuuma—a lineup she personally curated despite ongoing struggles with unpaid bills and legal claims from creditors. “People say I’m recklessly brave,” she told Yle. “But if you don’t try, you don’t win.”

The festival marks Päljänoja’s second attempt after last year’s inaugural Mirable Fest, held alongside a regional trade fair, drew praise but ended in financial loss. She initially vowed never to repeat the effort, yet within months reversed course, expanding this year’s event to occupy Parkano’s entire sports field with two stages. “I see light at the end of the tunnel,” she said, though she acknowledged the toll: “This has demanded everything, mentally.”

Competition for Finland’s shrinking festival audience is fierce. This summer alone has seen cancellations of Tampere’s Tuhdimmat Tahdit (due to bankruptcy), Seinäjoki’s Solar Sound, and Oulu’s Varjo (both for poor ticket sales). Industry leaders warn success hinges on pinpointing a core audience—something Päljänoja insists she’s done. “The artists were surprisingly eager to come,” she noted of her juhannus-weekend timing, a peak period for Finnish festivals.

Balancing the event with her two Parkano cafés, Päljänoja works late into the night scheduling staff and negotiating with vendors. On the day of Yle’s interview, she opened the café at dawn, met with the festival’s beverage supplier, then filmed a social media promo—all while crossing her fingers for clear skies. “I just need the weather to hold,” she said.

Sami Kerman, CEO of the Finnish events industry association Tapahtumateollisuus, cautioned that oversaturation isn’t the issue in smaller markets like Parkano. “For local audiences, a well-targeted festival can be vital,” he said. “The key is knowing exactly who you’re serving.”
