Finnish Parliament Group Concludes Report on Yle’s Funding, Awaits Review by Wednesday
The parliamentary working group of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) has completed its report on Yle’s funding, according to the group’s chairman, Matias Marttinen. He reveals the report will be forwarded to the parliamentary groups for review and expects their responses by Wednesday.
Marttinen has held bilateral negotiations with other party groups, including the Finns Party, on the matter. The working group’s meetings have been on hold for several weeks. The agreement reached today, he describes as the “most fragile compromise”.
The report will be published on Wednesday if the parliamentary groups approve the working group’s results. The group, made up of members of parliament evaluating Yle’s funding and its cuts, has faced difficulties, and its term has extended by over a month from the original schedule.
There has been dispute in the working group over the extent of funding cuts for Yle. Based on publicly available information, the Finns Party has demanded larger cuts than other parties.
No information is yet available about the content of the solution. Previously, the public discussions have included freezing Yle’s index increases and raising the value-added tax class from ten to fourteen.
