Pori council to decide on major construction projects including controversial event venue

Pori city council will vote next week on a sweeping investment package that includes a new central library, indoor sports facilities, a youth centre, and a contentious large-scale event venue, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The most divisive proposal centres on converting the historic Pori Machine Shop industrial buildings along the Kokemäenjoki riverbank into a major event space. The plan has split the two largest council factions, with the centre-right National Coalition Party backing the riverside location while the Social Democrats oppose it. The site is currently owned by the Prihti industrial family.

A decision on the library’s future appears closer to consensus, with sources indicating the current building—protected for its cultural value—will likely remain in place after a full renovation costing €25–27 million. A new-build option has not been ruled out entirely, though any reconstruction would retain only the building’s exterior shell.

The council’s special session, timed to coincide with Midsummer week, follows improved municipal finances after last year’s sale of energy utility Pori Energia. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum agree the city must act while funds are available.

Other projects bundled into the vote include a long-delayed collections centre for local museums and upgrades to youth facilities. The total investment for sports and event venues alone is estimated at €23–25 million, regardless of location.
