Anne Hiltunen, an expert in water safety from the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation, views floatation devices as useful tools for introducing children to water. However, she emphasizes the importance of supervision, especially for non-swimmers. Hiltunen warns that inflatable arm floaties and swim rings carry a risk of bursting and may not adequately keep a child afloat.

She also highlights potential hazards associated with floating materials, such as clothing with styrofoam inserts and buoyancy vests. For toddlers who lack swimming skills, managing their bodies can be challenging; thus, they should never be left unsupervised with these devices. “A child in a flotation suit or vest may not know how to position their body to keep their head above water,” Hiltunen explains. Additionally, buoyancy vests may increase the need for supervision, so it’s beneficial to practice using them with children.

According to Hiltunen, the best option for non-swimmers, especially on boats or near water, is to use life jackets. “On vacation properties or swimming beaches, life jackets are ideal. If a child falls in, they will rotate to keep their airways above water,” she states. It’s important to check that the jacket fits properly and meets weight classification and CE marking for safety. She notes that a toddler’s diaper or clothing could affect the life jacket’s performance, so it’s advisable to test its ability to flip the child onto their back.

Safety is maximized when a responsible adult is positioned between the child and deep water. “In dark waters, searching can be challenging,” Hiltunen points out, emphasizing that a parent should always be within arm’s reach to quickly assist if needed.
