Finland’s state-owned transport agency Fintraffic will shut down its Turku traffic management centre by the end of the summer, consolidating operations into its remaining hubs in Helsinki and Tampere, the agency announced Thursday.

The closure follows spring negotiations that determined the Turku centre’s functions would be redistributed. “Operations will be transferred to the other centres by late summer,” said Mikko Saariaho, Fintraffic’s director of strategy and communications.

The Turku centre currently oversees road networks in Southwest Finland, Satakunta, Ostrobothnia, South Ostrobothnia, and Central Ostrobothnia. Under the change, Southwest Finland will fall under the Helsinki centre’s jurisdiction, while the remaining regions will be managed by Tampere.

All ten permanent operational staff in Turku have been offered relocation to Helsinki or Tampere, with most expected to retain employment, Saariaho confirmed. The restructuring will not affect 24/7 service availability for road users or stakeholders.
