Thirty bridges across the Faroe Islands are now rated in poor or critical condition, according to a new assessment by the national road authority Landsverk.

The authority uses a five-point scale to evaluate bridge conditions, with five indicating a structure is unsafe for use. A rating of four signals ongoing deterioration. Landsverk confirmed that 30 bridges have received a four, including the Fjarðará bridge in Skálafjørður, where the deck is so degraded it risks collapse. Heavy vehicle traffic has been restricted on that bridge and another spanning Streymin.

Civil engineer Fríðrik Heinesen of Landsverk, who led the latest inspection, stated that the estimated cost of maintaining the national road network has risen significantly since the last assessment in 2018, when the figure stood at 375 million krona.
