Waste intake rises 14 percent at Tórshavn incineration plant

The municipal incineration plant in Tórshavn accepted 23,649 tonnes of waste in 2025, a 14 percent increase from the previous year, operator KOB reported.

Of the total, 75 percent was converted to energy, 22 percent was sent for recycling, and 3 percent was landfilled. Recycling volumes rose compared with 2024 because metal was shipped twice in 2025 versus once in 2024, and more glass and electronic waste were received.

Energy recovery increased by 1,000 tonnes year-on-year. Landfilling has dropped sharply over the past two years due to better sorting, and industrial waste is now taken directly to the landfill at Nýggjheiðum.
