Residents in the Danish town of Herning are calling on the city council to take action in a gang conflict that has escalated with shootings, arson, grenade attacks and a bomb robot deployment over the past week, according to Danish broadcaster DR.
The conflict, which police say involves the criminal groups Loyal to Familia and Comanches, has primarily affected Herning and the nearby town of Ikast. On Thursday, police cordoned off a residential area in the Gjellerup district of Herning and deployed a bomb robot to search for explosives.
Since May 17, a series of violent incidents have occurred: shots were fired at an apartment in Herning, fires were set at two addresses in Ikast leaving a female resident seriously burned, a hand grenade was detonated on a balcony in Herning, three people were arrested in connection with a stabbing linked to the Comanches group, and a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the grenade attack.
Residents have expressed growing unease. “I find it very uncomfortable that things are happening so close to us. We keep thinking this is something that happens in big cities, but now it’s reaching here,” said resident Ejgil Christensen. Another resident, Lasse Frølund, said the escalation means the council must now act: “It’s getting closer and closer, so now they have to do something.”
The city council previously intervened last year by imposing a gathering ban on a property west of Herning where the Comanches group attempted to establish a clubhouse. Mayor Dorte West (Venstre) said the municipality is following the situation closely and supporting police through its SSP (school, social services, police) cooperation and a dedicated gang council. “We are looking at how we can establish dialogue with the young people in the visitation zones,” she said.
