Jaguar cub chases older sister away from food at Danish zoo
A three-month-old jaguar cub named Markus has been caught on video chasing his older sister away from a rabbit carcass at Randers Regnskov in Denmark, the zoo confirmed.
Zookeeper Benny Rysz, who recorded the scene, said the cub’s aggressive behavior is natural even though he still nurses from his mother. “He has developed a taste for meat, and now he has gotten hold of that rabbit you see in the video, and there is no way anyone is going to touch it,” Rysz said. “His hunting instinct is kicking in, and once he gets hold of prey, he is determined to hold onto it and not share with anyone.”
In the video, Markus growls and hisses at his adult sister Sibba as she approaches, successfully driving her away. “A little devil comes out in him. He is very fired up, you could say. But it is completely normal and natural jaguar behavior,” Rysz added.
Sibba eventually did get rabbit for lunch, Rysz said, as Markus could not quite manage the entire carcass. “It is as if he wants the meat, but he does not really know what to do with the whole prey,” the zookeeper said.
Randers Regnskov is a zoological garden in central Jutland.
