A 35-year-old Norwegian man has been charged with the murder of two men in Gothenburg, Sweden, in September 2025, and claims he acted in self-defence, according to the indictment made public on Wednesday. The indictment, filed by Swedish prosecutors, states that on 2 September around 5pm, the man allegedly fired four shots from a 9mm pistol with expanding hollow-point bullets into a parked car east of central Gothenburg, hitting both victims, who were seated in the front seats, from behind. Two shots struck one victim in the back of the head or rear of the skull, and two shots hit the other man in the left side of the neck and forehead.

The suspect was arrested dramatically in a parking garage in Oslo around eight hours later, in the early hours of 3 September. According to Swedish authorities, he pointed a pistol at a police officer who was chasing him but eventually surrendered. Police believe the perpetrator fled the scene on an electric scooter through a park, passing two young girls who had heard the shots and filmed him, providing key evidence. Prosecutors allege the double murder is linked to a long-standing conflict between two criminal groups in Gothenburg. The man crossed the border from Sweden to Norway hours after the killings, leading to a car chase after police attempted to stop him. A Norwegian officer spotted an article about the double murder, contacted Swedish police, and the pursuit ended in the Oslo parking garage.

Evidence includes fingerprints on a rear door of the rental car where the victims were found, mobile phone communications, and DNA from one victim on the suspect’s clothing. The trial is set to begin in June at the Gothenburg District Court. The suspect faces life imprisonment. His defence lawyer, Erik Eckersund, told Göteborgs-Posten that he would elaborate on his client’s position during proceedings.
