The Faroese government has set aside 2.4 million krona this year to begin preparatory work for a new tunnel between Vágar Airport and the Vágatunnilin undersea tunnel, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Transport Minister Jacob Vestergaard confirmed the funding in response to a parliamentary question from MP Fía Selma Nielsen regarding road improvements in rural areas. According to the Faroese Road Administration (Landsverkið), 34 roads across the islands are under consideration for upgrades.

Traffic volumes in the Sandavágur and Miðvágur area average 4,500 vehicles per day, while the route between Tórshavn, Hoyvík, and Hvítanes sees around 15,000 daily. Vestergaard stated that securing long-term transport funding for rural development remains a priority but depends on available budgets.

The minister specifically mentioned plans for Gøtugjógv, where a new access road will connect directly to the Syðrugøta intersection.
