Nearly one-third of Icelanders use illegal streaming or downloads, according to a new survey commissioned by Frísk, an association representing television and film rights holders, mbl.is reports.

In recent weeks, as the new English football season approached, many people have been asking for recommendations for IPTV services that sell illegal streams. Numerous responses have offered descriptions of people buying services from various providers for little money.

“This is a much higher proportion than in Denmark and Sweden, and higher than in Finland, which we sometimes compare ourselves with,” Fróði Steingrímsson, chairman of Frísk, told Morgunblaðið.

He said not everyone realises that when a service is not purchased from the holder of the broadcasting rights, customers are invariably trading with and supporting organised international criminal activity.
