Sigurgeir Svanbergsson had to abandon his swim from Akranes to Reykjavik, which was intended to raise funds for children in Gaza, after six hours due to worsening weather conditions. He set out from Akranes at 10 AM, aiming to swim the 17 kilometers to Reykjavik. Initially, the first four kilometers went well, but the weather changed dramatically as he progressed.

Winds had exceeded 10 meters per second, while such swims are typically planned with winds below 5 meters per second for safety. Sigurgeir described the conditions as “dangerous,” stating, “There was just too much wind and wave action. You can’t control the weather, and unfortunately, this can happen.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing when conditions are not safe and making the decision to stop.

Despite the setback, Sigurgeir, who was swimming in partnership with the charity Barnaheill, felt physically and energetically strong but expressed disappointment at having to cut his swim short. He remains determined, declaring, “I will not stop until this challenge is completed,” indicating plans for a future attempt.
