Kemijärvi city council meeting collapses after walkout over disputed vote
A special meeting of Kemijärvi city council was abruptly suspended on Wednesday after several councillors staged a walkout, refusing to participate in what they called an “unlawful decision,” reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The dispute centred on a proposal to dismiss the city board’s chairmanship over a perceived loss of confidence. Councillors Veikko Niemelä (YKY) and Juha Pikkarainen (Left) presented competing motions—one to proceed with the dismissal, the other to return the matter for further preparation. The council voted 15–12 in favour of immediate action, but opposition members immediately began leaving the chamber in protest.
“I refuse to knowingly take part in an illegal decision,” Pikkarainen stated before exiting, arguing that the process violated municipal guidelines. Others, including Riitta Savukoski (NCP) and Heikki Nivala (Centre), the board chair in question, insisted the proposal had been rushed without proper legal grounding. Nivala claimed he had not been informed that dismissal would also remove him from the city board entirely.
With too few members remaining for a quorum, the meeting was adjourned. Councillors who stayed criticised the walkout as “a farce” and “a disgraceful spectacle.” First-term member Vesa Ahola (Finns) called it a poor example for new representatives, while Anita Ruokamo (Centre) described it as unprecedented in her four terms.
The conflict follows months of investigation by a temporary committee into the board chair’s conduct. A recent report highlighted broader tensions in Kemijärvi’s local politics, marked by personal attacks and challenges to officials’ competence.
