Danish national auditor slams police for failing to investigate cases while misleading victims
A whistleblowing police officer who exposed systemic failures in Denmark’s law enforcement can now breathe a sigh of relief, as the country’s national auditor has issued sharp criticism of the police for burying real cases and misleading victims, national broadcaster DR reports.
The National Audit Office of Denmark (Statsrevisorerne) found that a significant number of criminal cases were never investigated, despite police informing victims that probes were underway. The scathing report follows DR’s 2025 investigation, which first revealed that police were effectively “washing” cases—dismissing them without proper examination to improve clearance statistics.
In response, the National Police Commissioner (Rigspolitiet) acknowledged the severity of the criticism but argued that the audit does not fully reflect the scope of police work. Authorities have yet to outline concrete steps to address the failures.
