Sweden mentioned in newly released US UFO files
Newly declassified US military files on unidentified flying objects include a reference to a 1948 incident in Sweden, according to a report by public broadcaster SVT Nyheter.
The documents, released by the US Department of Defense, describe an unidentified object crashing into a Swedish lake that year. Swedish authorities reportedly conducted dive operations to locate the object but found only a crater beneath the water’s surface. US Air Force personnel are said to have observed the subsequent investigation.
Clas Svahn, chair of the Swedish UFO association and author of several books on the subject, confirmed the case refers to a well-documented observation by then-Supreme Commander Helge Jung. “He saw a cigar-shaped object flying over Våmfjärden, east of Stockholm, which then turned and crashed,” Svahn told SVT.
Svahn noted lingering uncertainties about the incident, particularly whether a crater was definitively identified. “The lakebed is very deep. Whether they actually found a crater—well, who knows. There are many unanswered questions,” he said.
