Faroese unemployment fund faces half-billion krona shortfall
The Faroese unemployment insurance system is missing around half a billion krona to cover future benefits, despite annual revenues of 200–300 million krona since 2016, national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Since 2010, the system has alternated between tax-based and membership-fee funding, depending on political decisions. A 2024 cross-party agreement established a permanent solution combining both models, but questions remain over its effectiveness.
While no party claims full satisfaction, politicians have accepted the compromise as a stable framework unlikely to face further political changes. A debate on the solution will air today on the Kringvarp Føroya programme Breddin at 10:00.
