The Bergen Walk of Fame has sparked controversy in Norway’s picturesque city. The debate erupted following the unveiling of a star on July 21st for John Fredriksen, a billionaire residing abroad. His inclusion among celebrated Bergen figures ignited backlash, with protests led by local personalities like acting legend Helge Jordal, who covered his own star in protest.

Political figures have expressed their concerns. Ole Torp, a former NRK personality, condemned the decision to honor “wealthy tax exiles,” while Eira Garrido from the Socialist Party (SV) called for greater public involvement in determining who deserves a star. Garrido remarked, “I believe the Walk of Fame now seems arbitrary regarding who actually deserves recognition.” Christine Kahrs, the city’s development councilor, shared the sentiment, suggesting a public vote to create a formal selection process.

Initiator Roger Iversen has stated his openness to a more democratic approach via local media. However, there are serious questions about how he obtained permission to install the stars. Kahrs clarified that while the municipality supports the ceremonies, it is not involved in the project, and there is no documented permission from the county authorities for this installation.

Officials from the Vestland County municipality highlighted that no formal approvals were granted and advised that individuals cannot alter public roads without permission. As the situation unfolds, discussions about establishing regulations governing the installation of such recognition in public spaces are underway, acknowledging the importance of transparent decision-making and community involvement. With nearly 70 names now engraved, the future of the Bergen Walk of Fame remains uncertain amidst these ongoing discussions.
