Mobile phone damage surges by 90 percent during summer months in Pirkanmaa
During the summer months, damage to mobile phones, eyeglasses, and sunglasses tends to increase significantly. This seasonal trend is reflected in a rise in claims submitted to insurance companies. According to Antti Määttänen, the head of claims and business support at Lähi-Tapiola in Pirkanmaa, mobile phone damage can surge by around 90 percent compared to figures from November and December.
Määttänen attributes this spike in part to lighter summer clothing. In winter, deep pockets in heavy coats often keep phones secure, and if they do fall, it’s likely into soft snow. However, during summer, wearing shorts or biking can lead to phones dropping directly onto hard asphalt.
Sunglasses and prescription glasses also see a notable increase in damage or loss over the summer. Määttänen points out that boating or engaging in activities near water often results in sunglasses ending up in the water.
Interestingly, the summer also brings about peculiar incidents, with exploding watermelons causing unexpected damage. Määttänen mentions instances where a watermelon left on a kitchen counter during a hot summer day has burst, resulting in juice spilling and damaging laminate flooring. While he does not disclose exact numbers, he notes multiple similar incidents.
As the summer season unfolds, it becomes increasingly important for individuals to be mindful of their belongings in order to mitigate these common mishaps.
