Heatwave continues in Finland as thunderstorms and rain showers expected this weekend
The weekend begins with hot weather, but thunderstorms and rain showers are expected. Meteorologist Henriikka Heikinoja from Yle reports that Friday will still be a warm day, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius in Lapland and the eastern regions of Finland.
“This week’s heatwave continues,” she notes. In Western Lapland and central Finland, a weather front is moving in, bringing rain and thunderstorms. Temperatures will be cooler in the vicinity of this front compared to Eastern Finland. Fire warnings are in effect across large areas of Northern Finland throughout the weekend, and these warnings are expected to extend to parts of Eastern Finland as well.
Thunderstorms and rain showers are anticipated on Friday and Saturday across various parts of the country. On Saturday, the weather front will shift over Eastern Finland, with rain and thunderstorms mainly affecting Eastern Lapland and Eastern Finland.
While temperatures in Eastern Finland could still be close to 30 degrees, there will be a slight overall cooling from Friday. “We are, however, still widely in heatwave conditions,” Heikinoja adds.
By Sunday, the weather will cool down further. Although temperatures will remain above 20 degrees across much of the country, it is unlikely that heat records will be broken again.
Overall, unstable weather is expected across nearly the entire country, with localized rain showers possible. Early next week, temperatures are forecast to hover just above 20 degrees across most areas, with northern parts of Finland expected to remain below 20 degrees.
