Lise Mortensen vividly recalls the day in May when her daughter, Karen Mortensen, fulfilled her lifelong dream by qualifying for the Olympics in rowing. Although it started as an ordinary day for Lise, who was at work, it quickly transformed into an extraordinary occasion. From her workplace, she watched the qualification event taking place in Lucerne, Switzerland, alongside her husband and youngest daughter at home.

“I closed the door to my office, and I think if anyone had been nearby, they would have been surprised. There was so much cheering; it was absolutely mind-blowing,” Lise remembered. After Karen secured her spot with seven other rowers, Lise spoke with her family over the phone. “They were just as excited. ‘This is unbelievable, it’s incredible,’ I believe we said.”

The 22-year-old Karen is set to compete in the women’s eight at the Olympics in Paris. However, that day was not solely about jubilation; it was also marked by mixed emotions. Prior to Karen’s success, her brother, Kaare Mortensen, had participated in the same qualification event but did not secure a spot.

“It put us in a difficult situation. How do you celebrate one child’s achievement while another feels disappointment?” Lise shared. They were careful not to overly express their excitement about Karen’s achievement when speaking with Kaare, especially since he wasn’t competing against her for the Olympic place.

Despite the initial challenges, the siblings’ strong bond and their family’s supportive dynamic allowed them all to navigate the situation smoothly. Lise expressed pride in both Karen and Kaare, celebrating their dedication and the extraordinary experiences of their Olympic journey. When the games commence in Paris, the Mortensen family will be cheering for Karen in the stands.
