Faroese labour leaders to discuss relevance of May Day in live radio debate
Ahead of International Workers’ Day on 1 May, Faroese labour unions will debate whether the traditional observance remains meaningful in a live radio discussion on Thursday, reports Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
The programme Breddin will examine the history of labour unions on the Faroe Islands, their original goals, and whether their core demands have been met. Guests will include Heri Reynheim, chair of the Tórshavn Workers’ Association (Havnar Arbeiðarafelag), and Sonja Jógvansdóttir, organiser for the union federation Verkafólki.
The debate, hosted by Birita Matras Petersen, will explore whether unions still face unresolved struggles and how their current priorities compare to past campaigns. The broadcast begins at 10:00 local time.
May Day has long been marked by Faroese unions with rallies and public statements, though participation has varied in recent years.
