Tampere rail passengers face extensive bus replacements in spring and summer
Travellers departing from Tampere by train will need to switch to buses on multiple routes this spring and summer due to major track renovation works, Yle reports. Daytime services will be replaced by rail-replacement buses, while overnight trains will be fully cancelled on three Saturdays between May and June.
The most significant disruptions affect the Tampere–Pori route, where trains will be replaced by buses on seven separate days: 2–3 May, 9–10 May, 11 May, and 6–7 June. Two bus services will operate: the direct B01 (1.5-hour journey) and the B02, which stops at intermediate stations (2 hours 45 minutes).
Other affected routes include Tampere–Parkano, Tampere–Seinäjoki, Tampere–Jyväskylä–Pieksämäki, and Tampere–Kuopio, with bus replacements scheduled between early May and late June. Overnight services will be completely suspended on 2 May, 9 May, and 6 June, with additional changes to the Helsinki–Kemijärvi night train timetable between 4–6 May and 11–13 May.
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto) states that most of the €230 million renovation—including track bed and surface upgrades, switch replacements, and electrical system updates—will occur this year. The project also involves constructing a new intermediate platform at Tampere station, with full completion expected by 2031.
During two weekend closures (2–3 May and 9–10 May), crews will dismantle a steel work platform beneath Erkkilä Bridge and remove supporting walls near the tracks. Residents near the bridge have been warned of high noise levels at night.
Passengers holding tickets for cancelled overnight trains will be contacted directly by VR (Finnish state railways) for rebooking or refunds. Further schedule adjustments may be announced as work progresses.
