New initiative aims to expand municipal healthcare system in Sweden
A new initiative is being developed to expand the municipal healthcare system across the country, ensuring uniform access to health services for citizens everywhere.
The emphasis will be on prioritizing patient care, with treatments provided locally to facilitate easier access to healthcare services. This change is particularly aimed at benefiting the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those with specific needs.
The legislative proposal aims to organize healthcare services in local communities, with numerous goals outlined. The Health Ministry has submitted the proposal for public consultation.
As stated in the coalition agreement, the reform seeks to ensure a consistent level of service nationwide for everyone. It emphasizes the importance of providing a coherent treatment process and enhancing cooperation between healthcare, social services, and elderly care sectors.
Additionally, the agreement notes that the systems and procedures must be reviewed to maximize the value obtained from investments in healthcare. It also emphasizes that everyone should have their own municipal doctor.
The new law is planned to take effect on January 1, 2025, at which point the existing legislation governing municipal doctors from 1999 will be repealed.
