Dogs bite at Helsinki fair as Kennel Association warns against bringing anxious or aggressive pets to large events
Several people, including a child, sought first aid after dog bites at a pet fair in Helsinki’s Messukeskus exhibition centre over the weekend, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports. The Finnish Kennel Club has responded by reminding owners that not all dogs are suited for crowded public events.
The incidents included a dog biting another, smaller dog, as well as multiple reports of human injuries requiring treatment at the event’s first aid station. The Kennel Club emphasised in a statement that dogs can become stressed in unfamiliar environments, particularly when faced with large crowds or unexpected stimuli.
“A dog should never be placed in a situation that is too stressful or challenging for it,” the organisation stated. Aggressive behaviour may stem from fear, pain, or inadequate socialisation, while genetics and training also play a role.
The club urged all dog owners to learn to read their pets’ body language to prevent potentially dangerous situations. “If a dog is anxious or prone to aggression, it does not belong at large public or dog events,” said Pirjo Onza, the Kennel Club’s executive director.
Violations of behaviour standards at Kennel Club events may result in temporary bans for the animal. The organisation also reminded the public to always ask permission before approaching or touching an unfamiliar dog.
