Rovaniemi sees dozens of pickpocketing cases during winter season – suspects likely from abroad, police say
Over 30 pickpocketing incidents were reported in Rovaniemi during the winter season, with suspects believed to be foreign professionals, according to Lapland Police.
Lapland Police confirmed that 16 cases were recorded in November–December, followed by 17 in March. The actual number may be higher, as some victims likely did not file reports, said Mika Lauri, head of the police surveillance and alert sector.
“I assume some cases go unreported,” Lauri told public broadcaster Yle.
The thefts primarily targeted tourists during peak season, with nearly all incidents occurring at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle. Crowded areas with heavy foot traffic were the most common locations.
Victims typically lost wallets, cash, and bank or credit cards. Police suspect the perpetrators are small, organised groups from abroad, though no arrests have been made.
“The delay in reporting these crimes—sometimes days later—makes investigations difficult,” Lauri explained.
So far, pickpocketing has been limited to Rovaniemi, with no reports from other Lapland tourist hubs like ski resorts. The issue first emerged in the city two winters ago.
