Finland is flying flags nationwide on Thursday in honour of war veterans, marking the country’s annual Veterans Day, reports national news agency STT.

The day commemorates those who served in Finland’s wars and marks the anniversary of the end of the Lapland War in 1945. The tradition of observing the Lapland War’s conclusion as Veterans Day began in 1987.

This year’s main ceremony is being held in Mikkeli, where President Alexander Stubb and his spouse Suzanne Innes-Stubb will meet veterans and members of the Lotta Svärd organisation, a voluntary women’s auxiliary group active during the wars.
