Large regional disparities exist in Denmark’s abortion rates, with social vulnerability identified as a key factor, according to a report by national broadcaster DR. Data from the Danish Health Data Authority shows that some municipalities report far higher abortion rates per 1,000 women of reproductive age (15–49) than others.

Lolland Municipality recorded the highest rate last year, with 125 abortions per 1,000 women, followed by Dragør, Odsherred, Slagelse, Guldborgsund, and Herlev. The lowest rates were found in Thisted and Sønderborg.

Charlotte Wilken-Jensen, head of the contraception and counselling clinic at Sex & Samfund (Sex & Society), attributes the variation to social disadvantage. “These are women who may have had difficult upbringings—perhaps with forced removals from their families, substance abuse issues, or weak labour market attachment,” she said.

The organisation stresses the need for preventive measures, including comprehensive sex education and accessible youth clinics offering contraceptive support. Many municipalities have already established such services.

Thomas de Richelieu, health director in Lolland—the municipality with the highest abortion rate—acknowledges the link between vulnerability and abortion. He argues that addressing root causes, rather than symptoms, is crucial. “It’s about ensuring these citizens receive coordinated support to improve their circumstances,” he said, adding that the municipality is actively working to enhance education and outreach.
