Goose collision with power lines sparks field fire in Lappeenranta
A goose struck overhead power lines in Lappeenranta on Wednesday, igniting a fire that destroyed a grain field, a barn, and a combine harvester stored inside, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The incident occurred near Old Viipuri Road in the Karkkola area. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 12:30 PM local time. Firefighters confirmed the blaze consumed roughly half a hectare of crops, along with the outbuilding and its contents.
Duty fire chief identified the bird as either a Canada goose or a barnacle goose. Crews extinguished the fire within an hour of arrival.
Old Viipuri Road runs south of Lappeenranta in southeastern Finland.
