Tenant attacked landlord with hammer after eviction attempt in Raahe
A man in Raahe, Finland, has admitted to violently assaulting his former landlord with a hammer after a dispute over eviction, according to a trial that began Tuesday in Oulu District Court. Prosecutors are seeking an unconditional prison sentence for attempted manslaughter.
The incident occurred last summer when the tenant allegedly went to the landlord’s workplace, first striking him in the jaw with his fist before hitting him three times in the head with a hammer, prosecutors stated.
The defendant acknowledges the violence but denies attempting to kill the landlord, with his defence arguing the act constituted aggravated assault at most. According to the defence, the tenant had intended only to discuss the eviction but the situation “suddenly escalated.”
The conflict stemmed from a rental dispute. The tenant claimed the landlord had taken his keys, changed the apartment locks, and blocked access to his belongings, even though the eviction order was not yet legally in force. The defence maintains the tenant had not premeditated the attack.
The Oulu District Court will deliver its verdict at a later date.
