The Danish newspaper Nordjyske has abandoned plans to discontinue its print edition in 2027, citing continued profitability, reports national broadcaster DR.

In 2024, then-editor-in-chief Kevin Walsh announced the intention to phase out the physical newspaper by 2027, transitioning to a fully digital format. However, Lars Gudbrandsson, the newly appointed CEO of Nordjyske Medier, has now reversed that decision.

“As long as people want the newspaper, as long as there’s a market for it, and as long as we can make it profitable, it doesn’t make sense to close something that brings in money,” Gudbrandsson told DR.

While declining to disclose circulation figures, Gudbrandsson confirmed that the print edition remains a profitable operation. He dismissed suggestions that the reversal stems from a lack of digital subscribers, stating, “It’s solely because we see that there’s still money in the print newspaper. It would be a shame to turn down good revenue.”

Despite the reprieve for the print edition, Gudbrandsson acknowledged that its long-term future is limited. “Our digital focus remains intact,” he said. “But we need to offer something for all customers—both those who prefer the print newspaper and those who want a digital product.”

The company has faced financial challenges in recent years, with declining revenue and multiple rounds of layoffs. According to industry publication Journalisten, the number of journalists in the newsroom has dropped from 98 in 2020 to 47 today.

Founded in 1767, Nordjyske serves the North Jutland region of Denmark.
