Helsinki, public disturbances, youth crime

Residents and workers in Helsinki’s Vuosaari district report ongoing disturbances by groups of young girls, with calls for more youth activities to address the issue, Yle reports.

A group of girls under 15 has been linked to dozens of robberies and assaults in the area, particularly around the Columbus shopping centre. Staff describe frequent disruptions, including harassment of customers and property damage. The centre has increased security in response.

Last week, reports emerged of a gang of underage girls involved in at least 30 violent incidents across Helsinki, including in Vuosaari and Pasila. While some locals recognise the group, others say disruptive behaviour—such as shouting at elderly people and shoplifting—has been a persistent problem for over a year.

Young residents interviewed by Yle suggest more organised activities, like sports tournaments, could help. “We need football, basketball, badminton—something to do,” one said.

Workers at the shopping centre describe nightly gatherings of 12–14-year-olds, with girls often leading the disturbances. “They shout, vape in the baby care room, and break things,” said Stani Ryanzhin, a café employee. Another staff member, Sunil Dhakal, reported groups of up to dozens loitering outside restaurants, stealing snacks, and vandalising facilities.

The shopping centre’s management confirms efforts to improve safety, including closer cooperation with youth services. However, staff say problems resume once supervisors leave.
