Fingrid selects route for new power line between Sipoo and Vantaa
Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid has chosen the route for a new 400-kilovolt power line between Sipoo’s Anttila substation and Vantaa’s Länsisalmi substation, the company announced on Tuesday. Construction is scheduled for 2028–2030.
The selected route largely follows existing transmission corridors, minimising environmental and community impacts, Fingrid stated. The decision follows an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and public feedback, which led to adjustments to reduce disruptions to residents and nature.
In the central section between Rimossen and Landbo in Sipoo, the line will share a corridor with Fingrid’s existing 400-kilovolt transmission line near Sipoonkorpi National Park, using shared pylons. However, due to extensive outage requirements during construction, this solution cannot extend south of Genaträsk. From Landbo to Länsisalmi, the line will run parallel to the existing 400-kilovolt line, sharing pylons with a current 110-kilovolt line.
Fingrid emphasised that the project supports Finland’s climate goals and strengthens electricity supply security in the Helsinki metropolitan area, compensating for the phase-out of fossil-based power and heat production. The line is part of broader efforts to ensure grid reliability as electricity transmission needs grow toward the country’s 2035 carbon neutrality target.
Detailed route planning, including field surveys and pylons placement, will continue, with landowners contacted directly. The Permit and Supervision Authority (formerly Uusimaa ELY Centre) issued its decision in February.
