Police believe excessive speed was the cause of a deadly head-on collision in Tuusula over the weekend that killed both drivers, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

The crash occurred just after midnight on Saturday along Järvenpääntie road in Tuusula, southern Finland. The 27-year-old female driver of one vehicle and the 19-year-old male driver of the other died at the scene. A 22-year-old female passenger in one of the cars suffered serious injuries.

According to Anssi Murto, chief investigator at the Eastern Uusimaa Police Department, the 27-year-old woman is suspected of driving at high speed northbound on Järvenpääntie before colliding with the oncoming vehicle. Preliminary investigations suggest the impact occurred on the southbound lane side.

No witnesses have come forward, as the accident happened late at night. However, two separate drivers stopped at the scene shortly after the collision. One reported that the suspect vehicle had overtaken them at high speed on Rantatie road, roughly one kilometre before the crash site.

Police have found no evidence to suggest alcohol or drugs were involved. All individuals involved were local residents of Tuusula.
