The municipal planning committee of Tórshavn has approved a development plan for a new town centre in Kollafjørður, including nearly 6,000 square metres of residential and row-house construction, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The plan, greenlit earlier this week, will allocate land in the Lygnes area for housing, addressing long-standing demands for expanded residential options in the Faroe Islands’ longest village. Kollafjørður, currently bisected by a major through road, has lacked a defined central hub.

“This is a major step forward for Kollafjørður,” said Anja Weyhe, chair of Tórshavn Municipality’s building and planning committee. “There is a clear need for more housing in the village, and this project holds great significance for the local community’s development.”

The approved plan includes provisions for multiple new homes, though exact numbers have not yet been specified. Construction timelines were not detailed in the announcement.
