Greenland’s former premier Múte B. Egede has been appointed minister for foreign affairs, trade and raw materials, replacing Vivian Motzfeldt, state broadcaster DR reports.

Egede, a member of the Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, served as Greenland’s premier from 2021 to 2025 before becoming finance minister. He assumes the foreign affairs post at a time of heightened international pressure on Greenland, particularly from the United States.

“This is a role where the global spotlight can be blinding—it demands experience and stamina,” said Mads Korsager, DR’s defence correspondent. “Egede has the background and has worked at the highest level. Not just anyone could take this on.”

Motzfeldt stepped down after her party, Siumut, withdrew from the ruling coalition last month—a decision she opposed. She has since left the party and now sits as an independent in Greenland’s parliament, Inatsisartut.

Egede, who described himself as “more than ready” for the position, stated: “I will always defend our country and its people. I look forward to continuing this work.”

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called Egede “a politician with vast experience who has shouldered great responsibility before,” noting his leadership during a period when US interest in Greenland first intensified. “He is fully prepared to take on this immense responsibility alongside us in the government,” Nielsen said.

The current coalition, excluding Siumut, retains a majority with 19 of 31 seats in Inatsisartut. New ministers include Jørgen Rosbach (Demokraatit), Iddimanngiiu Jensen Bianco (IA), Maritha Broberg (Atassut), and Mariane Paviasen Jensen (IA). Former Siumut member Kim Kielsen, now an independent, was re-elected as parliamentary speaker.
