Four long-missing photographs from a sports-themed exhibition in Jyväskylä’s Monitoimitalo (Monnari) multi-purpose facility have been unexpectedly returned to the city, local public broadcaster Yle reports.

Anna-Leena Sahindal, Jyväskylä’s director of sports services, confirmed that an unnamed private individual contacted the city and returned the artworks, which had disappeared over the years. The recovered pieces include a photograph of four-time Olympic gold medallist Lasse Virén.

The frames showed signs of damage, but the images themselves remained in good condition. Sahindal told Yle she understood the works had come into the individual’s possession by chance, and they had immediately reached out to authorities.

The photographs are part of a 1999 exhibition by Jyrki Kuokkanen, originally displayed in Monnari’s café. Over time, several pieces vanished without explanation. A public appeal in January 2024 led to some returns, though the city has not pursued criminal charges for the newly recovered works.

Eleven of 18 artworks now accounted for

Sahindal said 11 of the original 18 photographs are now secure, stored in Monnari’s office spaces. At least one remains missing and is believed to be severely damaged. While occasional requests to acquire the works have been made over the years, all have been refused.

Police previously investigated the disappearances as theft but closed the case in 2024, citing an inability to trace the missing items. With no surveillance footage available and the incidents spanning years, authorities determined further action was unlikely to succeed.

The city has no plans to file a new report over the returned artworks. “Their monetary value is quite modest,” Sahindal noted. “What matters is that they’ve been returned to the city.”
