A new Faroese play, Holið (The Holes), uses the metaphor of a literal hole in a boat to examine how strangers must collaborate to overcome shared obstacles, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The play begins with five travellers in bright clothing meeting on a single boat, forced to work together to repair a hole that has appeared. Beyond its physical form, the “hole” symbolises deeper struggles—trauma, conflict, or stumbling blocks in life’s journey.

Director Kristianna Klein explains that the production highlights how people, regardless of differences in background or identity, must unite to navigate life’s challenges. The play’s title plays on the Faroese word holið, which can mean both a physical hole and a broader metaphor for hardship.

Holið premiered on April 13, 2026.
